Kerygma Groups help adults gain knowledge and understanding of the Bible as a whole.
Study Leader: Bob Guffey, Pastor

The Kerygma Program’s quality resources continue stimulating faith and challenging minds through Bible study that: (a) takes adults seriously; (b) connects the Old Testament and New Testament themes revealing God’s grand, deep vision for God’s people; and (c) brings joy to those willing to put in the time to prepare. Biblical understanding is a prelude to theological belief. The Bible should inform theology, not theology the Bible.

The courses in The Kerygma Program are built on the assumptions that: (a) the best resource for Bible study is the Bible, or better, the Bible whole; and (b) an awareness of the full scope of the biblical story provides needed balance for the building of faith. Participants will become better prepared for hearing the Scripture speak for itself, understood on its own terms, and conveying its own truth. Last year, 65 FBC adults participated in Kerygma groups.

Kerygma studies are for all learners from beginning to advanced.

the covenant relationship between God and people echoes

The Book of Revelation: Visions for Churches in Crisis

An 11-week study, 7:00–8:00 p.m.

Book fee: $20

The study this fall will meet on eleven Thursday evenings, beginning September 2 and concluding before Thanksgiving. The sessions will consist of ten 1-hour sessions (7-8 p.m.) and one 2-hour session (7-9 p.m.).

"I find study of the Revelation inspiring and helpful, especially as we follow the Kerygma approach of learning, first, what Revelation meant for the early churches. This approach helps us break down the symbols and metaphors, making them much easier to understand. Instead of being book full of fright and judgment, Revelation will be revealed to be a pastoral message from Jesus through John to the churches.

"As part of the study, I am open to addressing contemporary questions and misunderstandings of the Revelation that are so popular in portions of North American Christianity. What is most important, though, is to understand that in this study, we will focus on: (1) why Revelation was written, (2) what it has meant to the followers of Jesus for 2000 years, (3) how the same God of mercy, compassion and grace is reflected and honored in its words and (4) the message of Revelation for God's people living today." Grace and peace, rwg

That You May Believe: The Gospel of John

In fourteen clear, directed sessions, walk anew through this Gospel to the end "that you may believe."  John's Gospel offers spiritually attuned, stunningly beautiful insights into the nature of Jesus and the meaning of faith.    We witness signs and wonders, view contrasts of darkness and light, blindness and sight, death and new life as John puts before us who Jesus is, where he has come from and where he is going.  From start to finish John's purpose is plain: "These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, and believing ... have life in his name."
